Alan Cockrell, a distinguished all-around athlete from Southwest Missouri, excelled in football and baseball at the University of Tennessee, becoming the first true freshman QB starter and earning All- American honors in both sports. Drafted first-round by the San Francisco Giants in 1984, he played MLB for the Giants and Rockies before transitioning to coaching.
Known for his discipline-focused philosophy, he held MLB coaching positions with the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees. After retirement and knee replacements, Cockrell co-founded the Stampede Baseball Club in Charlotte, NC, mentoring teens in baseball fundamentals and Godly values.

The award is named for Don Gabriel, father of entertainer Doug Gabriel, who founded the Branson Christian Business Men’s Committee, which birthed the Ozark Mountain Prayer Breakfast. The honor is given each year to a person or persons who “contributes to the quality of the community by demonstrating in word and action a dedication and dynamic Christian life.”
